Knowing your undertone is essential to finding a foundation that will look as gorgeous on you as your natural skin does. Using the wrong shade or the wrong undertone will not only result in your face looking a different color to the rest of your body, but it will also just look super unflattering.
Finding your flawless foundation match is about getting two things right: knowing your skin tone – are you fair, light, medium, tan or rich – and determining your undertone; there are three main undertones to choose from! The latter seems like it would be a mission to figure out, but it’s actually easy when you ask yourself the right questions.
Undertones:
Honestly, even half of the HB HQ didn’t know their undertone, but we’ve put all our tips to the test and figured out the undertones of everyone in the office (essential prep for #FauxFilter Foundation!). Whether you’re fair, tanned or rich, you can have any of the following three skin tones:
Warm: Also referred to as golden, peachy, olive (yellow/greenish), and yellow
Your celeb warm-undertoned heroes: Beyonce (#FF shade: Toffee 420G), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Jessica Alba
Cool: Your undertone looks blue, red or pink
Your celeb cool-undertoned fam: Queen Latifah, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o
Neutral: You have both warm and cool undertones
Your celeb neutral-undertoned champions: Kerry Washington, Angelina Jolie, Blake Lively
How to figure out your undertone:
Decode Your Veins
It’s not as weird as it sounds! Look at the veins on your wrists, do they have a blue or a green tinge? Although your veins are blue, if you have a warm skin tone, the yellowy-golden tint of your skin will give the blue veins the appearance of having a green tinge – like looking at blue through a yellow filter. If you’re cool toned, your veins will look bluer.
Use What Your Mamma Gave You
Your natural hair and eye colors are a key indicator of your skin tone:
Cool tones:
Hair: Brown, black or blond
Eyes: Blue, grey, or green
Warm tones:
Hair: Red, brown, black or strawberry blonde
Eyes: Brown, hazel, amber
Try On Jewelry
Do you have a penchant for gold or silver jewelry? If you’re obsessed with all things gold, chances are it suits your skin tone better, and that’s why you have so much of it! Gold jewelry typically suits warm-toned complexions, while silver is more complementary on cooler tones. Look at your jewelry, which metal makes your skin look more gorgeous? If gold brings out your glow you’re warm, if silver makes your skin look more alive, your skin is cool-toned. If your skin looks great in both and you can’t notice a major difference, you’re probably neutral.
